Khulna University is one of the best public educational institutions in Khulna. It is the 9th public university in Bangladesh. It is situated near the river 'moyur' beside Dhaka Shatkhira highway. The astonishing feature of this university is that it is the only university in Bangladesh, which is free from student politics and session jam.


With 80 students and 4 disciplines, this renowned university started its academic curriculum in 1991. The university has a long way with a great reputation since its beginning by spreading the light of wisdom.


The aims and objectives of Khulna University are to provide contemporary and technology-based education. This institution also aims to ensure proper extraction, utilization, and conservation of natural resources for the sustainable development of the country, to maintain the highest standard of education in line with international standards, to conduct fundamental and practical research, and to meet global needs and to develop qualified and efficient human resources.

History of establishment:


The Kudrat-E-Khuda Commission stated the importance of establishing a public university in Khulna Division in 1974. On 4 January 1987, the then government finalized the program of establishing a university in Khulna. Then in July 1990, the Khulna University Act was passed in the Bangladesh National Parliament. This distinctive law named, "The Khulna University Act, 1990" (খুলনা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আইন) empowers the university and on 25 November 1991, the university started its formal academic inauguration activities.


Let's have a short look at the significant historic events of Khulna University from the beginning.


•    1974: The Kudrat-e-Khuda Commission mentioned the importance of establishing a public university in the Khulna division in their report.


•    1979: In November, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to establish a technical university but the local people demanded a general university.


•    1985: The Zillur Rahman Siddiqui Committee (for preparing academic and administrative programs) and Mahbubuzzaman Committee (for the selection of site) was formed by the government.


•    1987: Based on the above committee's report the government finalized the proposal of establishing a public university at Khulna on 4 January.


•    1988: On 25 February, the then Divisional Commissioner, Nurul Islam was appointed the project director for establishing the university. On 2nd August, Abdur Rahim, the then Divisional Commissioner and after him, Abdul Bari served as project director.


•    1989: The then President Hussain Muhammad Ershad laid the foundation stone on 9th March. 1st August in the same year Golam Rahman of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was appointed the project director.


•    1990: In June, The Khulna University Act 1990 was passed in Jatiyo Sangshad. Later on 31st July the act was published in gazette form.


•    1991: In August, Project director Golam Rahman was appointed the first vice-chancellor. The first Orientation was held on 3rd August and on 31st August the academic programme of the university started. On 25th November, the academic program was formally inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.


The academic program of the university commenced in August 1991 with four disciplines: Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Architecture, Business Administration (BA), and Urban and Rural Planning (URP).


In the following year, Forestry and Wood Technology (FWT) and Fisheries and Marine Resources Technology (FMRT) disciplines started up. Now there are 29 disciplines under eight schools and one institute. The medium of instruction is English.

Monuments and Sculptures of Khulna University


Odommo Bangla


Odammo Bangla Liberation War sculpture is located at Khulna University. Its architect is artist Gopal Chandra Pal. Its construction started in 2011 and was completed in January 2012.


42 lakh taka has been spent on the construction of this sculpture of the modern eye-catching 23 feet high liberation war. In the main part of the sculpture, portraits of four strong and radiant freedom fighters, including a woman, are placed, which are the embodiment of the bravery of the Bengali nation. The sculpture reflects the collective role of active participation of freedom-seeking people and men and women in the great liberation war. In the mural around the altar, the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's historic March 7 speech, the portraits of the four national leaders, the brutality of the slaughterhouse, and the surrender of the Pakistani invading forces are depicted in burnt clay.


Khulna University Central Temple


Khulna University Central Temple was established in response to the continuous demand of Hindu students of the university. It is situated in front of Aparajita Hall and Sir Acharya Jagadish Chandra Academic Building. The foundation stone of the temple was laid on 15 February 2013. Construction of the temple was started on 20 August 2015. It took 7 years and 7 months to inaugurate the long-awaited temple from foundation date.


The main temple is about 1100 square feet and the temple compound is about 3,000 square feet. The then Vice Chancellor Md Fayek Uzzaman inaugurated the temple on 24th September 2020. Hindu students of the university observe Saraswati Puja here every year. A magazine "Panchami" is published each year during the Saraswati Puja. Besides, Krishna Janmashtami is observed annually by the Hindu students. They also observe Diwali every year lighting well lamps over the campus including Hadi Chattar, Main Gate.


Facilities of Khulna University


Central Library


The central library of Khulna University has its own building. The library room has a floor space of 5,000 sq. ft. (465 sq meters). The reading room has accommodation for 125 students, 25 teachers, and research scholars working simultaneously. Khulna University library has a collection of 25,000 reading materials, including 23,000 books and 200 bound volumes of journals.

The KU Library plays a key role in the whole educational process of Khulna University. About 800 users visit the KU Library every day. Out of them, 200 to 250 users make use of circulation facilities, 50 to 70 utilize the photocopy services, and 400 to 450 avail of the journal and newspaper facilities, while other readers access textbooks, reference books & reference service facilities. The Central Library is a Wi-Fi hotspot. Moreover, a good number of users search online books and journals through in-house workstations. To control and support a large number of users, the KU Library has several sections. All the sections of the library work together as a team to support the whole university community. Different sections of the library have been created to provide fruitful library services to the users' community.

Medical Center


The University Medical Center has 13 full-time doctors, an emergency department, 2 ambulances, x-ray machines, and a dental department. Apart from this, there are arrangements for pathological examination.

The well-organized cafeteria of Khulna University serves fresh and hygienic food.

Gymnasium


Khulna University has a well-equipped gymnasium. Students other staff and teachers can take a membership card.


The university has opportunities to play football, cricket, volleyball, badminton, basketball, and tennis. Students participate in national and international debate competitions. Regular cultural programs are held in the university.


Centre of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL)


At Khulna University, there is a research center named 'The Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning' that works mainly to improve the teaching and learning system of the university.


The motto of CETL is to deliver high-quality professional learning programs, engage in scholarship, and conduct research in support of university-wide teaching and learning development.


Khulna University Research and Institutes


A research cell was established at Khulna University in 2000 to conduct research on teachers. A research journal called Khulna University Studies is published regularly. Moreover, some disciplines publish their own research journals. Quarterly Khulna University News is published about the current activities of Khulna University.


There are 30 modern laboratories, Computer Laboratory, Building Science, Acoustic, and Lighting laboratories for modern architectural design, a Biotechnology laboratories, a Tissue Culture Laboratory, a Centre for Geographical Information Systems (CGIS), a Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Laboratory for using Landsat imageries and inventory purpose.
